7 Warning Signs Your Child May Need Medical Attention

As a parent, it's normal to worry when your child feels unwell — but how do you know when it's time to call a doctor or bring them in for care? While some symptoms are mild and pass quickly, others may point to something more serious. Here are 7 key warning signs that your child may need professional medical attention.

When in Doubt, Check It Out

Unsure about your child’s symptoms? Trust Clinic is here for clarity, care, and peace of mind.

1. High or Persistent Fever

A fever isn’t always dangerous — in fact, it’s the body’s way of fighting infection. But if your child:

  • Is under 3 months old with any fever over 38°C
  • Has a fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Or if the fever comes with lethargy, rash, or difficulty breathing
    See a doctor immediately.

2. Breathing Difficulties

If your child is:

  • Wheezing
  • Breathing faster than usual
  • Using extra muscles to breathe (you see ribs or stomach pulling in)
→ These may indicate asthma, a chest infection, or even pneumonia.
    Don’t wait. Seek help.

3. Persistent Vomiting or Diarrhoea

Dehydration can happen fast in children. If your child:

  • Can’t keep fluids down
  • Has 6+ bouts of diarrhoea in a day
  • Has dry lips, sunken eyes, or is not urinating
→ Bring them to a doctor.

4. Unusual Drowsiness or Confusion

A sleepy baby may sound like a blessing — but excessive drowsiness, confusion, or a child who’s not responding normally could signal a neurological issue, high fever complications, or dehydration.

5. Rashes That Spread or Don’t Fade

Not all rashes are urgent, but if your child has a rash that:

  • Spreads quickly
  • Looks like bruises or purple spots
  • Doesn’t fade when pressed
→ It could be serious, like meningitis or a blood infection. Get checked immediately.

6. Persistent Pain or Crying

Is your child crying inconsolably? Complaining of:

  • Severe headache
  • Ear pain
  • Stomach pain that won’t go away
→ If the pain doesn’t ease or your child becomes restless, it’s time to consult a doctor.

7. Signs of Dehydration

Especially after a fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Watch for:

  • No tears when crying
  • Less than 1 wet diaper in 8 hours
  • Sunken soft spot (in babies)
  • Dry, sticky mouth
→ Prompt hydration is key, but medical attention may be needed if symptoms persist.
